We hear statements made everyday by folks in the press, candidates, business owners, and even everyday people on the street. They say ldquo; All this trouble in the world is Americarsquo;s fault, why if we had just minded our own business we would be a lot better off. I wish I could be proud of America.rdquo; I stand in dismay when I hear statements like this. I look back at our history, a history rich in honor and tradition. A country to be proud of.
In 1776 a few brave men stood up and signed a declaration. I am sure that people in England found this very offensive. Why we ridiculed the king, and even rejected his taxes. The founding fathers did not really care about the king they saw the future, a future of a free country.A country where even the lowest born could achieve great things. I am proud of the stand our founding fathers took and stand in aweof the blood shed and sacrifice to insure our freedom.
I know along the way we made choices, some that were right, and some decisions that were absolutely wrong. Some of the decisions that were wrong carried a high price tag to correct. If you follow the thread of history you will find that great people tackled these issues and corrected them. These people that tackled this problem was cut from the same cloth as the founding fathers.
During the civil war, some of the bloodiest fighting the world had seen, took place. Many soldiers died, they were all Americans. I am proud of them. The sacrifices were felt nationwide. Not a single family was spared the pain of that bloody conflict. Principled men taking a stand on each side. The slavery issue had been a seething issue that was bound to breal into war sooner or later. It did not matter whether you were fighting for the north or south ,you were fighting for what you believed in. That made the conflict even more bloody because of the resoluteness of the men involved. A trait that is sorely lacking in todayrsquo;s society.
The times after the Civil war were still tumultuous and strident. We saw the expansion of the frontier westward. We, unfortunately, at this time saw the Indians being shoved westward. The events again that happened are atrocious and looking back we have to ask why? The answer was simple, we were slowly being formed into a society that stood on ideas, and would pay any price to defend that idea. In the case of the Indian wars it could be seen that both sides stood on resolute principle and honor. Our leaders today can learn a lot from a principled stand. There is a time to compromise and make a better decision. But to make compromise a way to governand live is absurd, not to mention dangerous.
Later on we would fight in 2 world wars, suffer through a depression, and see the first atom bomb dropped. During these times we had leaders who would not accept compromise at all. Roosevelt knew after we entered World War 2 compromise for peace was not option, we had to have total victory. I believe that today our leaders if faced with a situation like the D-day invasion would vote no on it. They would wring their hands and say lets not do this the price is to high.
Truman like Roosevelt was faced with a critical decision, a decision that no other leader in our nationrsquo;s history would ever face. He knew that the invasion of Japan would be as bloody and devastating as D-day was. A weapon was placed in front of him that would take the fight out of the Japanese. Truman knew the Japanese were principled people and would fight all the way for their Emperor. He gave the order, Nagasaki and Hiroshima were devastated. He made a decision based on his principles and beliefs. He did not poll any group to see if this was the right thing to do. Thousands of lives were saved on both sides Japanese and Americans alike because of this decision. He stood resolute in his decision.

We would as a nation see a civil rights movement, nothing like the world had ever seen before led by a principled and resolute man. This man truly believed in what he preached. He stood behind his words and accomplished great things not by the sword, but by the power of conviction and his character. His belief in God was clear and his strength came from God. In Martin Luther kings speech ldquo;I have a dreamrdquo; we see a vision of America where a man is judged by character and what he can do, and not by the color of his skin. This is as powerful a speech as the Gettysburg Address was.
It was a challenge to lay down race and our preconceived notions and become brothers. It cost him His life. Most stands on conviction and principle come with a price.I am proud of the greatest generation and the ones that followed.
In todayrsquo;s society we seemed to have lost our way. We do not believe in conviction and principle. We have replaced those words with compromise and giving in. We govern not by principle but by the numbers our pollsters have given us. If leaders like Martin Luther king had waited to see a poll before deciding what to, and he followed the poll, we would not have seen the civil rights movement.
Today our leaders use the polls to govern; this was what the founding fathers feared. The representative type of government was put into place to take the place of mob rule leadership. I truly believe today we have that. The only difference is that mob rule has been replaced by poll rules. And this makes it even more dangerous because no poll can be said to represent a majority.
I am proud of our young soldiers who every day takes on the good fight. Some make the ultimate sacrifice. Colin Powell one time said in response to a question about American imperialism, he responded by saying ldquo; All the ground we have ever asked for was just enough to bury our deadrdquo; All over the world we have sacrificed bone, blood and body for others freedom. But they can not comprehend the value of the gift. Mainly because it is a gift that has a price tag bathed in blood. We have a country built on God, honor, principle, self sacrifice, and a desire to do the right thing. We are slowly devaluing these principles. We must return to a country that honors these, and I know we will. Ronald Reagan once called America ldquo;A Shining City on a Hillrdquo; Sometimes the shine does dull but we as Americans need to get out the polish rags and get to work.
Looking back over our countryrsquo;s history, I stand in awe of our accomplishments, weep for our mistakes, stand in awe of our great leaders, great men and women who seemed to appear at the right time. I am proud of our flag, our nation our leadership, our nations honor.I am proud of the countryrsquo;s willingness to spread freedom, and the generosity of America. I stand amazed and unworthy. I stand in awe of a fledgling nation of 13 colonies, that became the dominate power on the face of the earth.
We are a Shining city on a hill, we are a great nation, we are not the cause of the worldrsquo;s problems, we can offer help to others and have in the past, we offer religious freedom to a degree the rest of the world can not even imagine, we are philanthropic, we are Americans, and for that I am proud. It has endured and will continue to endure. We must find principled men to stand and draw a line in the sand. We must have a leader who puts America first.
God Bless the United States of America.
